Each year, the Piedmont Spotter Group in conjunction with Charlotte Regional Skywarn present a deserving amateur radio operator with the William Martin Award for Excellence. William Martin (SK) was a huge factor in the formation of the PSG and we honor his legacy with this award.
This year we opened up nominations and received two worthy candidates. Our membership has voted and the result was a tie! Therefore we will recognize both nominees as the winner of this award for 2015.
Earl Fortner K4KAY, a long time member of the Mecklenburg Amateur Radio Society (W4BFB), is a recipient this year. Earl has worked tireless for years as part of the W4BFB repeater committee, as well as being chairman. He has worked hard to keep the repeaters up and working flawless. Earl has been a great elmer to younger amateurs, and has passed down some of his knowledge of radio networks and tricks of the trade to the next generation. Earl is stepping down as chairman from the committee and his knowledge and experience will be hard to replace and someone will have some big shoes to fill.
Earl, thank you for the years of hard work and for all you have done for the Amateur Radio community. It is with great pleasure that we present the 2015 William Martin Award of Excellence to you.
Greg Huffman W4GCH, one of our very own was also nominated and is also a recipient of this prestigious award this year. Greg is always there to help out. Wether calling a PSG net, Skywarn Net, working a hamfest, or other event. He helped work the weather fest event this year at UNCC. At this event, Greg talked to all that stopped by our booth and told them about Amateur Radio and how we helped the weather community by taking and submitting reports. Greg recently accepted a Co-Net Manager position with the PSG and he along with John Crowe (N4LBX) has worked day in and day out managing the net and recruiting new NCO’s. Not too many nets go by that Greg isn’t there checking in and scribing for the NCO. He is a great Ambassador for Amateur Radio, never shy to promote the hobby in a positive light, as well as a representative of the Piedmont Spotter Group, and Charlotte Regional Skywarn.
Greg, you are a huge asset to our organization, and I am glad you are a part of both PSG and Skywarn. We’re a better organization because of your efforts and hard work. Thank you for all you do for us. It is my pleasure to present to you the William Martin Award of Excellence for 2015.
On behalf of the Piedmont Spotter Group, congratulations to both of our recipients this year and thank you both for everything you’ve done for Amateur Radio.
God Bless and 73
